Why Body Breath Intelligence?

Man with arms outstretched

Core Philosophy: The core philosophy behind Body Breath Intelligence lies in the recognition of the holistic interplay between mind, body, and breath. In contrast to the prevailing reductionist view of health and well-being, Body Breath Intelligence promotes a natural balance between the body and breath while honoring the role of our innate internal intelligence.

As We Breathe, We Live, Thrive, and Succeed: The way we breathe plays a major role in our health, wellness, and quality of life; however, many of us have lost connection with the breath. By practicing breathwork, we can help our bodies to perform more effectively and increase our energy levels. The ability to maintain an optimal level of respiration can make the difference between surviving and thriving. However, how many of us really pay close attention to how we breathe, or how the breath affects the body, or how life situations affect the breath? We tend to focus more on what we eat and drink than how we breathe. But there is more power in the breath than most of us realize.

Bringing Focus to the Breath: Modern life has generated many hurdles to health and well-being through stress, non-optimal diet, and hectic societal conventions. Correspondingly, this has led to a dramatic increase in chronic over-breathing. By focusing our attention on the breath, we can tap into and harness our innate biological intelligence in a way that encourages our physiology to function naturally and efficiently and promote a restoration of functional breathing. Developing good breathing habits can be the first step in reclaiming our vitality. Through the breath, we can promote and sustain healthy physiological functions throughout the body.

Who is Phil Chilson?

Phil Chilson & Dog

Dr. Phillip Chilson has studied and worked in the field of physics for most of his professional career. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics (Magna Cum Laude) from Clemson University in 1985 and then spent one year working at a nuclear research facility in Germany on a Fulbright Scholarship (1985 – 1986). After returning to the US, Dr. Chilson went on to earn Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Physics from the University of Florida in 1990 and Clemson University in 1993, respectively. He has held positions at the Max-Planck Institut für Aeronomie in Germany (1994 – 1997), the Swedish Institute of Space Physics in Sweden (1997 – 2000), and the University of Colorado (2000 – 2004). Most recently he served as a Professor in the School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma and Director of the University’s Center for Autonomous Sensing and Sampling. While at the University of Oklahoma (2005 – 2021), Dr. Chilson pursued a wide variety of research topics, including investigations of the atmospheric boundary layer, aeroecology, the advancement of remote sensing technologies, and the development of unmanned aerial systems for atmospheric studies. Before joining the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Chilson also worked in solid-state physics, ultra-low temperature physics, and aeronomy.

New Directions

In 2021, Dr. Chilson decided to take a bold step by leaving his position at the University of Oklahoma to deepen his own journey towards self-discovery and to begin sharing what he has learned along the way with others. At face value, this may appear to be a dramatically new direction. However, in parallel with his work in physics atmospheric research, Dr. Chilson has spent over 30 years exploring his own personal path of self-inquiry. As a physicist and research scientist, he has taken a pragmatic and evidence-based approach along the way. During this process, he has treated his own life as a living experiment while sorting and sifting through various ideologies and techniques that he has come across and applied to himself. Dr. Chilson has discovered some of the many methods that we can use to (re)condition our minds and to reinterpret our experiences in a way that allows us to reconcile the past and embrace the present with confidence and a sense of empowerment.

Since beginning work on his PhD, Dr. Chilson has largely focused on studies of the Earth’s atmosphere, atmospheric physics, and weather. Through breathwork, he is adding a new dimension to this research path by following the atmosphere from the “skies above” as it moves into the body and how this exchange impacts our health, our focus, and our intention. In essence, Dr. Chilson is exploring the personal connection we have with the atmosphere from a perspective of inspiration, as defined by its different meanings: i) the inhalation of air, ii) the excitement of mind and emotions, and iii) the connection with spirit or the divine.

Dr. Chilson is now an Advanced Instructor in the Oxygen Advantage program.

In parallel, Dr. Chilson is continuing along his research path through his affiliation with the Ronin Institute.
